Bookkeeping Tips from the BOS: Subcontractors vs Employees

Every few months I have this conversation with clients and I am going to take the next couple of weeks and go over the keep elements of what the IRS states is how to determine an Independent Contractor (aka subcontractor) vs and Employee.

The first area is Behavioral Control. This refers to facts that show whether there is a right to direct or control how the worker does the work. There are 4 elements that are taken into consideration:

• Type of instructions given – Where, When, How, What type of Tools and Who purchases materials to name a few.

• Degree of instruction - Degree of Instruction means that the more detailed the instructions, the more control the business exercises over the worker. More detailed instructions indicate that the worker is an employee.

• Evaluation systems - measures the details of how the work is performed, then these factors would point to an employee.

• Training - If the business provides the worker with training on how to do the job, this indicates that the business wants the job done in a particular way.

-Discuss any measures you've taken to address the problem, such as improved scheduling, time management strategies, or seeking support to manage any underlying issues.

Caring for a Family Member:

-Explain that you had a significant responsibility caring for a family member, providing necessary support and assistance during a challenging time.

-Highlight your commitment to fulfilling your responsibilities while ensuring your family member's well-being.

Jail Time:

-Be honest about your incarceration but keep the explanation brief and professional.

-Focus on personal growth, participation in educational programs, and rehabilitation during your time in jail, such as participating in educational programs or acquiring new skills.

-Emphasize your commitment to making positive changes.

Health Issues:

-Briefly explain that you had a health concern that required your attention and focus during the gap.

Remember- Honesty, authenticity, and a positive attitude can make a difference. Good luck in your job search!

Mosquito Hill Nature Center

We're getting closer to officially opening our All People's (Sensory) Garden! Installed recently were the welcome sign and two-sided sensory wall. We also ordered and received a pair of Enchroma sunglasses for those with colorblindness (helps wearers see more vibrant colors) that can be used when in the garden. The final signage should be complete in a week or two and installation will hopefully coincide with the blooming of most of the garden's flowers. If you're in the neighborhood, please stop by and check out our progress.

Interested in being a Head Coach? Attached is the application to be a head coach for the 2024 season. If you are interested in coaching a tournament team, please fill out the application by 8/1/23.

Tournament teams are currently determined by age as of January 1st of the year. **Please note there is a board vote pending to change the age cutoff to September 1st of the prior year. If you have any questions please contact Kerri (920) 538-1559.
If a team has more than one candidate for the position of head coach, the candidates are encouraged to attend the 8/16/23 board meeting to highlight their qualifications prior to a board vote on 8/16/23. Candidates will be notified in advance of the 8/16/23 meeting if their desired position will be determined by a vote.
