The federal Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) program was expanded for the 2021 tax year only. For the first time, workers without children had income qualifications expanded, which made more workers eligible. The maximum credit was nearly tripled for these taxpayers!
The federal EITC credit was enacted in 1975 and quickly became one of the largest anti-poverty programs in America. In 2020 the EITC benefited approximately 349,000 Wisconsin residents who received over $787 million dollars in refunds. This averaged out to $2,254 for each household in Wisconsin that claimed the EITC.
